This is an interesting article and a unique perspective on Dallas as a photography setting from such a world-renowned British fine art photographer. Anyone who has lived in Dallas for any amount of time knows it is an ever-changing city with a rapidly evolving culture. As one on the inside, it is always fun to hear how people on the outside looking in perceive the city. The only constant here is change.

Trinity River after the Flood

All the images above were taken the day after Dallas received a historical level of rainfall the day before. The rain amount was from 10″ to 15″ in 24 hours depending on where it fell. This record of rain fell days after a heat wave record of 67 consecutive days without rain and heat above 100 degrees ended. This deluge caused the Trinity River bed to go from cracked parched earth to flood stage above 30 feet in less than 24 hours. With that rain, the dry cracked earth caused by the drought and heat was under water.

The picture below was taken a few days before the rain.

The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge Arch

The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge Arch
The Margaret Hunt Hill Arch

This is a picture I took of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge Arch in Dallas Texas one Sunday morning in October 2018. Due to a period of heavy rain, the Trinity River was at flood stage, cresting at over 40 feet. I went there with the objective of getting shots of the high water level and flood waters in the levee. In the end, the nice cloudy background in the shots provided some unexpected aesthetic subject matter as an added bonus.

Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and Dallas Skyline

A monochrome image of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and Dallas Skyline I too k in October 2015
Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and Dallas Skyline

This is a picture of the Margaret Hunt Hill and Dallas Skyline I took around sunset in October 2015 The composition felt good, but the colors always felt off and distracting. Although I worked on it several times over the years, the results were always unsatisfying. Black & White monochrome did not capture the mood of the scene. Finally, I went with what you see here and am happy after all this time to post a version of that shot from years ago that I feel works!

Bell UH-1D Iroquois Huey at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas Texas

This is a picture I took at sundown of a Bell UH-1D Iroquois Huey Helicopter on static display. Because of the fading light, I was able to capture a nice, silhouetted image of its iconic shape contrasted against a muted gradient of transitioning sky colors at twilight. For those interested, this aircraft is on permanent static display at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas Texas. There is a wonderful history behind this particular helicopter and it is a story worth checking out. You can find it in the link below.
